How to Get to Stavanger

Stavanger is located on the southwestern coast of Norway and is somewhat more difficult to get to, but can be reached by plane, train, or cruise ship!

The main airport is Stavanger Lufthavn Sola, which is a 25 minute drive from downtown Stavanger. There is public transportation available from the airport into town via Bus FB40, which runs every 20 minutes.

The main train station is Stavanger S, which is reachable directly from Oslo! The train ride from Oslo to Stavanger is an 8hr train ride and can be done overnight (there are sleeper cars available) or during the day so that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can book your train tickets here.

What to Do in Stavanger

Stavanger is a beautiful town situated on the North Sea. It is a small town, but is a gem and definitely worth visiting –  especially if you want to do the famous hike up to Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock (more information on that below)!

Take a walk through Gamle Stavanger –  Stavanger’s beautiful old town. The cobblestone streets and little white houses are so picturesque!

Enjoy the ambience of the harbor at one of the cafes along Skagenkaien.

Go shopping along the beautiful Kirkegata and Søregata streets! These connecting streets are absolutely adorable and have lots of amazing shops to explore!

Visit the jaw-dropping Lysefjord by boat! Speed through the fjords on a RIB boat, and visit Hengjanefossen Waterfall and Pulpit Rock by water! This is such an amazing experience that I enjoyed very much! You can book this amazing experience here.

Take a boat ride out to a small island and enjoy the beautiful gardens and restaurant!  Find out more information here – Flor og Fjære.

Rainy day? Visit the Stavanger Museum. This museum, built in 1893, offers exhibits on local cultural & natural history and also has displays for kids.

Visit Øvre Holmegate! This cute street is full of life, color, and exuberance. Enjoy a bite to eat at one of their restaurants or just take in the rainbow colored buildings!

Take a picture at Sverd i fjell! These Swords in the Rock mark the Viking battle of Hafrsfjord when Norway was united into one kingdom, and is definitely a cool photo-op with the beautiful view of the bay behind.

Book a private yacht for the day to explore the Norwegian Fjords! This is a once in a lifetime experience for a great price! Book it here.

Hike up to Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock! This is definitely the highlight of the area, and I recommend anyone that is in physical shape to do this hike! The views from the top are definitely worth the 4-6hr round trip hike! I recommend taking a picnic lunch to eat at the top while you enjoy the views! Be aware that there are no ropes or security edges along the rocks and the fjords edge, so be careful where you step, and don’t get too close to the edge while trying to take a cool picture! There are toilets and a cafe at base camp, but the rest of the way it is just you and nature, so come prepared! Bring plenty of water and any food you need with you! You can get more information from their official website. Not sure how to get there on your own? Book a day trip to Pulpit Rock here!

Please note that Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock is a 40 minute drive from Stavanger, but there are also shuttles and tours available during certain months out of the year. To get directions on how to get there on your own, you can get more information here. Or take an all-inclusive tour from Stavanger, including transportation. Reserve your spot here!

Visit Kjeragbolten – the famous, picturesque boulder mysteriously wedged between cliffs! Roundtrip transportation is included in this amazing tour. Reserve your spot here!
