How to Get to Rome

Rome is the capital city of Italy and is easily accessible by airplane from anywhere in the world or by train from other parts of Europe.

The primary airport in Rome is Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) serving all the major airlines and international airports. There is also a secondary airport called Rome–Ciampino G. B. Pastine International Airport (CIA) where discount airlines such as Ryan Air and Easy Jet often fly into.

Rome is easily accessed from the rest of Europe via train. The main train station in Rome is Roma Termini.

Rome has two main train companies – Tren Italia and Italo – so if you are buying tickets, make sure to check them both out in order to see which prices and train schedules best fit your needs.

Rome’s cruise port is called Civitavecchia, and is located 70km (45 miles) NW of Rome. There is train access from Rome’s airports and from Rome to Civitavecchia.

Times between each of these destinations vary depending on mode of transportation (car, bus, or train) and time of day. Input the distances into Google Maps in order to get the best time estimate between places according to your chosen means of transportation.

Here are some timelines of time it takes to get between places:

  • 40 minutes between Rome and CIA
  • 50 minutes between FCO and Civitavecchia Port
  • 80 minutes between Ciampino Airport and Civitavecchia Port
  • 90 minutes between Rome and Civitavecchia Port

Where to Eat in Rome

If you are looking for ambience, my two favorite squares for lunch or dinner are Piazza Navona and Campo de’Fiori. Both of these beautiful piazzas have restaurants filled with ambience, street artists, and music.

If you go across the River Tiber, the Trastevere area also has amazing restaurants and a fun evening scene with twinkle lights, music, and street vendors.

In summertime, there are also restaurants, shops, and games set out along the riverbank itself – Lungo il Tevere! It’s perfect for a stroll, a date night, or fun with the family.

If you are looking for the top Michelin star rated restaurants in Rome, look no further than here.
