How to Get to Budapest

The main airport is Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. There is a bus service that goes directly from the airport to the town center.

The main train station is Budapest-Keleti. Budapest is easily accessed from Vienna, Austria (link to Vienna page) by train. It is only a 2.5 hour train ride away!

Budapest has a great subway system and tram system. I would recommend taking the subway at least once, as the underground subway stops are some of the most beautiful I have ever seen in the world!

What to Do in Budapest

Budapest is the capital of Hungary and is such a unique and magical city to explore. Budapest is divided in two by the Danube River, with Buda on the hilly side of the river and Pest on the flatter side.

On the Pest side, I would recommend enjoying the main town. The main pedestrian streets are Váci Utca and Deák Ferenc U. They are both loaded with great shopping and restaurants to check out. At the end of these streets you will find  beautiful Centar Park with a giant ferris wheel that you can enjoy as well.

On the Buda side, I would recommend taking the funicular up Castle Hill to Buda’s beautiful Old Town! There you can visit Buda Castle which is now the Hungarian National Gallery.

Then wander the cobblestone streets of the Old Town of Budapest, take in Matthias Church, and enjoy the magical views of the river and city below. Right next to Matthias Church, you will find the beautiful Fisherman’s Bastion.

Fisherman’s Bastion is my favorite part of the Old Town, as it looks like a magical fairytale land. The buildings, arches, and staircases are quite dreamy, and there are even a few cafes that you can sit in and have a cheesecake and a coffee (or a hot meal), while enjoying the beautiful river and city views below.

The Hungarian Thermal Baths are one of the highlights of visiting Budapest. There are so many different thermal bath locations that you can choose from, but the Széchenyi Thermal Baths are the largest and most famous. For information and ticketing info, you can visit their website here. Other Hungarian Thermal Bath locations include Rudas Thermal Bath, Gellért Thermal Bath, Dandár Thermal Bath, and so many others.

Take a day trip to Vienna, Austria – less than a 2.5 hour train ride away!

Where to Eat in Budapest

I would highly recommend visiting two of the most beautiful cafes in the world – The New York Cafe and The Párisi Passage. Both have the most stunning architecture and are perfect for a nice meal or just a hot drink & dessert.

There are lots of great cafes and restaurants along the main pedestrian streets, up in the Old Town, and throughout the city. It really just depends on your taste and what you are looking for! Here are the top overall recommended restaurants in Budapest according to google reviews.

Vegan/Vegetarian? Napfényes Restaurant and Confectionery and Vegan Garden are two of the most highly recommended in the city!

If you are looking for the best Michelin star rated restaurants in Budapest, look no further than here.
